Ian, you are absolutely right. I think this film couldn't have been more timely if Sony, Fincher and Sorkin had timed it deliberately. I didn't start my livejournal until August of 2004, by which time I was safely off at Illinois State. There, I had a very boring social life. If I had Livejournal at Augustana, I can only imagine what a hard time I'd have restraining myself from talking at length about the issues I was having with friends, girls, and instructors/professors... Thankfully, all the journal writing I did during that time was restrained to pen and paper or Microsoft Word.
I think we don't realize how many people have access to what we post on line, and we type as if only a few privileged, trusted people will lay eyes on it. I think anyone can get carried away and post something in the heat of the moment that they will pay for down the road. As Justin Timberlake's Sean Parker said, "Private behavior is a relic of a time gone by." Perhaps one of the best lines of the movie.
