Icon Tutorial 1-Princess Serenity

Nov 23, 2006 22:42

This isn't really my first tutorial, but I couldn't remember what number I was on and I couldn't find it, nor could I check my files to see what number I was on since my hard drive crash wiped everything. :-( I think I was on 7, but I went back to 1 just to be sure.

Features Princess Serenity from the anime version of Sailor Moon.

There's about 12 different images behind the cut. Done in Photoshop 7, but should be translatable. Relatively easy, just uses lots of layers.

1.) Start with your base image. Sharpen it if required. Duplicate your base layer (Layer>Duplicate Layer) and set it to Hard Light, 100% Opacity. Desaturate that layer. Should get something like this:

2.) Create a new layer, and fill it with #448CCB. Set that layer to Pin Light, 50% Opacity. I got:

3.) It's so blue it's painful now. Let's make it a bit more interesting, shall we? Take this texture:

And set it to Screen, 100% Opacity. Got me this:

4.) Now we have very little color. So goes the circle of my life. Meh. Take this light texture (with pwetty colors!):

Set it to Color, 100% Opacity. I wound up with:

5.) Still a little bland. Take this pwetty spotlight:

And set it to Color, 100% Opacity. Drag it wherever you think it looks best; I dragged it to the upper right-hand corner (on her back) to wind up with the following:

6.) The icon looks awfully blurry now, and we're losing some of the original image. Duplicate your base (Layer>Duplicate Layer) and drag it to the top. Set that layer to Soft Light, 100% Opacity. Got yours truly the following:

7.) You could stop at the last step if you want, but lord knows I'm not happy when I create my own tutorial without adding a border, text, or both, so I added some text to the bottom left-hand corner. Here are my settings:

Text #1
Words: ON A
Color: #818181
Font: Centaur
Size: 14pt

Text #2
Words: mission ;
Color: #818181
Font: Beautiful ES
Size: 30pt

Here's how it looked with the text minus border:

8.) Lastly, a border. To add a border, select your whole layer with the Rectangular Marquee Tool. Copy this area (Ctrl+C works), and create a new layer. WITHOUT DESELECTING (if you deselect you have to go back to your last layert with content and copy it again, then come back to the new layer), go to Edit>Stroke. Punch it the settings, press OK, deselect, and voila. You have a border. Here were my settings:

Width: 1px
Color: #818181
Position: Center

This leads us to my final icon:
