tutorial #5
Wow, it's been months since I posted a tutorial, but I guess this one is cute, so I had to share with you guys, of course. So I hope you enjoy it!
1. Start with your base. My choice is Evangeline Lilly, which I grabbed from sunny_roads. Crop it the best way you can.
2. My base was pretty much perfect in terms of lighting, so I didn't need to make major changes. I duplicated it and set it to Screen, with a 34% of opacity.
Note: if your base is dark, you might wanna increase the opacity or add another screen layer, but I recommend you do it only when this tutorial is over, so you can have the exact notion of the final coloring you'll get.
3. Now we'll start adding some color to the picture. Let's add a color balance layer to the pic. Go to Layer >> New Adjustment Layer >> Color Balance. My settings:
Midtones:
20/-17/-17
Highlights:
16/-18/-15
Set this layer to Soft Color, with a 39% of Opacity.
4. Repeat step #3, only choosing Selective Color instead of Color Balance. My settings:
REDS:
cyan: -100
magenta: +30
yellow: +100
black: 0
YELLOW:
cyan: -100
magenta: 0
yellow: -49
black: 0
NEUTRALS:
cyan: +14
magenta: -4
yellow: -10
black: +15
5. Add a Hue/Saturation layer, by going to Layer >> New Adjustment Layer >> Hue/Saturation. My settings were:
Master: +10
Red: +8
Yellow: -10
Cyan: -37
6. Another Selective Color layer, we're almost there, I promise!
NEUTRALS:
cyan: 0
magenta: 0
yellow: +8
black: -16
This step won't make much of a difference now, only when we add the last one, so don't kill me XDD
7. Last step, finally, we're going to add yet another Color Blance layer.
Midtones:
-37/+29/+38
Shadow:
-38/+19/+35
And voilà, here's your final result!
Feel free to add textures, brushes and text to make the desired decoration on the icon. The following icons were also made using the same techinique, with only some changes, which means I added some screen layers or changed opacities. Be creative and I'm sure you'll come up with great results!
