tutorial - based on this icon (but not quite the same)

, asked for by library_of_sex

1. You don't have to resize it at this point, but i do so it gives me a good idea of what it's going to look like at the end. so i cropped it.

2. duplicate the layer, and filter > sharpen > smart sharpen. my settings are amount 100% at a 1.0 radius, they are probably the standard settings. I prefer most caps to be sharpened a little, but i always use smart sharpen rather than just sharpen.
I also set my layer to screen, i found this a bit much and lowered the opacity to 81%. depending on the cap you can play around with this, if the cap is darker you can try adding another screen layer.

3. new adjustment layer > colour balance, to make the colours stand out more.
midtones = +16, +19, -9
shadows = +20, -10, -7

as you can see, i've already pasted in a background layer. this is important for the next step.

4. Now i erased all the extra background. I find the best way of doing this is using my eraser brush and zooming into my picture as close as possible.
Make sure you merge your layers abover the background together first!
this will be your result.

I guess it would be possible to leave your icon as is, or play around with different backgrouds till you are happy at this point!

5. I decided at this point to change my background to the orginal texture used in the first icon i made. it's by sanami276

6. i added a curves layer
point one - 98, 106
point two - 177, 179

7. fill layer I used #fee3da on soft light, at 25% opacity

8. there is some more purple colour in the first icon, which i achieved this time by a fill layer on soft light, 35% (#b77cc4)

9. the icon was looking a little washed out at this point, so i added an adjustment layer > brightness/contrast
brightness -11
contrast +10

10. last layer - create a new layer, and using a white brush with 0% hardness and between size 15 and 20 make some light effects. this will depend on the Cap you used, where you put these, but just play around until you get it right. I then Guassian Blur this layer OR set it to soft light or screen. It depends on my mood, the cap, and so on.

and you get this

now i can't find the cap for this icon, because i take my own caps and deleted them,

but i imagine it was the same colouring, with this texture

you can find the PSD file here!, please comment if you take this. These steps are pretty specific to this cap, so it might not work with much else, i don't know :)
