Supernatural Tutorial
→
Includes: Curves, Selective Colouring, Colour Fill, Brightness/Contrast.
Steps: 6 ish.
Difficulty: Easy.
Program: Photoshop CS3.
I've chosen a cap from my favourite episode of Supernatural. You may find that this colouring is going to work best on those.
So, prepare your base to how you like. I use the crop tool and resize down to 100 x 100 px.
As you can see I've used a particularly dark cap, it also contains a lot of blue that we're going to get rid of. But first of all we're going to brighten it by using a curves layer.
Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves...
Point one:
Input - 53, Output - 108.
Point two:
Input - 84, Output - 152.
Point three:
Input - 173, Output - 220.
My outcome:
The cap looks a bit starved of colour so we ought to put some back, no? Okie dokie let's add a new curves layer :)
We're going to adjust the R, B, and G curves And stay away from the RGB channel because we are only changing the colour.
Red:
Point one:
Input - 39, Output - 52.
Point two:
Input - 130, Output - 144.
Point three:
Input - 220, Output - 201.
(Okay this one may not make much difference but we'll do it anyway).
Green:
Input - 128, Output - 127.
Then, Blue:
Point one:
Input - 52, Output - 47.
Point two:
Input - 146, Output - 142
Point three:
Input - 203, Output: 212.
My outcome:
There, all nice, well slightly more colourful :) Though it needs more magenta and a tad more red. So we do this by adding a new selective colouring layer to bump them up!
Whites:
+9
+52
-20
-22
(This sort of lightens the cap a little more).
Neutrals:
+5
+11
-3
+6
That layer also brought some contrast to the cap. Now we're going to add a sort of dumbed down effect, this is usually done using the exclusion setting. So go to Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Colour... Fill it with #561f1b and set it to exclusion w/ opacity 29%.
Now we're going to add more brightness/contrast to make the cap stand out more with another curves layer...
RGB:
Point one:
Input - 40, Output - 35.
Point two:
Input - 84, Output - 110.
Point three:
Input - 166, Output - 216.
There we have it! Now just to add that bit more contrast obviously using the brightness/contrast layer adjustment...
Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Brightness/Contrast...
Brightness: -11
Contrast: +16.
The finished product:
