I had a few tuts on this saved but they have since been removed or the step by step images deleted so I'm hoping someone knows of a good tutorial for this particular graphic. I use Photoshop CS5
Graphic is a bit on the large side )

program: photoshop, photoshop: tools, graphic effects: brushes, resource: brushes

The credits aren't mine. Please visit berensonmoved. Maybe there you'll get some answers.
I'd just go for a huge, soft eraser tool. Don't think it's that complicated to create that sort of fade effect. I was just to lazy to create my own header the other day and I loved what berensonmoved created.

Cut your subject from the background, paste on a new document with a background color of your choosing, fade edges by carefully using a large soft round brush, make a new layer and do filter > render > clouds set it soft light, add a psd and POOF Need any more help lemme know :)

Okay I tried what you said and it worked!! Thank you so much, I really appreciate it. It was the fading edges part that I was missing and that was making the image look fake. I think I need to fade the edges a bit more but it's looking a heck of a lot better than before.

Another trick is to add a layer mask and add a gradient [white to black] on the mask layer to fade it out
