I'm semi-new to icon making but I do have a background in photography and what gives these photographs the color and grain is that they are taken with film.
Film captures more natural colors whereas digital distorts them. Almost all digital photography has to go through post-production for color correction. Film also has that "texture" quality, almost making the images look 3D. Digital is smoother but also flatter.
The camera looks very budget friendly, so the grain level is increased and the photos aren't too crisp. It gives it a nostalgic tone as we have lots of footage and memories of early camera owners taking millions of photos that look like this. ;)
