As I look at the 2 icons, to my eyes, the 60kb icon has more vibrant colors. What is the DPI on your image? It might be higher 72 (standard for internet). Have you tried copying the merged image and pasting it into a new 100x100, 72 dpi canvas?

I have PS CS3 so somethings might be different, but since, I would think, save for web and dpi is basic stuff, it probably wouldn't be different.

i hadn't thought of pasting it onto a new canvas, but i just tried that and it did lower the kb however it's still over 40kb.

how would i go about checking the dpi?

i'm not sure if it's relevant, but when i open a new canvas this is what comes up:

Resolution is the DPI (dots per inch). On this canvas the resolution is 118.11, change the resolution to 72, it should make the kbs lower. Try it and let me know.

the results were the same as before, the kb is lower but it's now 58kb.
