Icon Tutorial for GIMP, but easily translateable

Jul 28, 2005 22:42

I made an icon today that I thought turned out great by using all the skills I've picked up from icon_tutorial, so I thought I'd share how I accomplished it using GIMP. This is my first attempt at a tutorial, so I hope it helps. As long as you have basic skills in GIMP or any graphic program you should be able to follow this tutorial. Before I go on, DO NOT copy this tutorial exactly, I made this icon for ships100 and I consider it thievery if someone makes an icon exactly like the ones people make for tutorials. On a lighter note I'd love to see what people come up with. :)

Go from this
to this

*The cap was found here.*

1. First of all I cropped the picture I wanted to use and scaled it down to 100 x 100 pixels. (Image->Scale Image) Then I duplicated the base and set it to screen at 100 opacity. This helped lighten the image easily. I only sharpened the duplicated layer.

2. I created a new layer and applied this gradient

(I'm not sure who made it).
I set it to overlay at 44.9 opacity.

3. I created another layer and applied this gradient

(again I'm not sure who made it).
I set it to overlay at 51.7 opacity.

4. I added another layer and applied this gradient

(made by ??).
I set it to screen at 100 opacity.

5. I then duplicated the base and brought it to the top and set it to overlay at 100 opacity.

6. The next step may sound a little complicated, but it was the easiest way for me to accomplish what I wanted to do. I cropped the lower half of their faces, added a white 2 pixel border (Script-Fu->Decor->Add Border), copied it, and then undid the border and cropping. I pasted what I just copied onto the image twice because I liked the way it came out. I placed the copies slighty on top of one another and here's what I got:

7. Then I added this light texture

(made by honerbright)
I flipped the the image so it wouldn't cover Pacey's body and set it to screen at 100 opacity. I erased the light that covered the two small images.

8. Now for the text. I added "loving" in futura at size 10 in black and "arms" in LainieDaySH at size 22 also in black. The text looked kind of lonely so I added tiny text in Arial at size 1. The first line says "never felt this way, so safe, protected" and the second line says "when i'm with you i feel like i'm home at last." As you can tell I like my tiny text to actually say something. The text looked fine by itself, but I decided to add a heart brush made by _joni in orange on a new, transparent layer. I flattened my image (Image->Flatten Image) and here's what I ended up with:

I hope this tutorial was somewhat helpful and made sense. If you have any questions feel free to ask. :) If you know who made any of the gradients or textures I used plase let me know so I can credit them.
