05: Fiona Apple (coloring); PS7+ [layers, layer modes, adjustment layers]

Today we're making an icon featuring Fiona Apple.

For Adobe Photoshop 7 and Photoshop CS, but can probably be translated, if willing. :D

This is meant to be only a general guide for the coloring; there is still much more that can be done to finish the icon.


I don't remember if I did anything with the base, but here it is, pretty, but I want to change the colors up. The picture is from Rigadoon.net:


I messed around with and Adjustment Layer, using the curves:


These are the settings I used to get the following: Red, Input: 204, Output: 102. Set it on Color @ 46%:


Next, I put an exclusion layer, using the color 0C1A3C. Set it to Exclusion @ 30%, which can be changed to your liking for a more dramatic result:


Duplicate the base layer and bring it to the top, set it to Soft Light @ 10% (very subtle), for the final result:
