i don't know if anyone will find this useful, but i'm so completely bored that i wrote it anyway :)

go from this
to

USING PSP8 (but i'm sure it's easily translatable)

we're gonna start off with our base first. i made a screencap from the "buttons" video by the pussycat dolls.

copy the background layer twice. set the middle layer to screen: 50% opacity and the top layer to softlight: 100% opacity. the opacities vary depending on the lightness/darkness of your base. merge all layers (layers>>merge>>merge all)

duplicate the background layer & fill with #0A0B3E, a really dark blue layer. set it to exclusion: 89% opacity. merge all layers again. so you should have this so far:

duplicate the background layer once again, and set the layer to softlight: 100% opacity (you can skip this step if you don't want it to be as bright/shiny). go to layers>>new adjustment layers>>curves. use the following settings:

!IMPORTANT! you MUST click first and make a point or else this will not work right.

RGB
Input: 14
Output: 69

Red
Input: 95
Output: 11

Green
Input: 67
Output: 19

Blue
Input: 4
Output: 7

press OK. merge all layers. you should have this so far:

copy your background layer. set to burn: 7% opacity. i know there is not much a difference, but it makes the icon look a little darker. now go to layers>>new adjustment layer>>brightness/contrast. set your brightness to 5 and your contrast to 7. press OK. merge all, sharpen if you need to, and you're done!

here are some other quick icons i made using the same effect:

i think this tutorial generally works better with darker images. if your image is light, you'll have to make the burn layer a darker opacity and maybe even reduce the brightness/contrast layer.

i'd love to see the effects you all get with this tutorial! :) hope i could help somebody.
