Ok, this is my first time posting here, so let me know if I have forgotten something in my tutorial.
Today's tutorial:
from
I will be showing you how to make this Julia Stiles icon, but first a few things:
- I post my icons at
Five O'Clock World.
- This tutorial will only work really nicely if you have a really yellow image. If you don't the tutorial will still probably work, you will just have to do some tweaking.
- Please do not copy this tutorial exactly, as many people before me have said: Tutorials are made so that you can learn new things, by copying my icon, you are pretty much defeating the purpose. By giving this tutorial, I am assuming that you will be using it so that you can learn new techniques.
- This icon was made in Adobe PS 7 along with everything else I make.
Ok, now the tutorial:
1. First I am starting off with
this image of Julia Stiles. I resized it so that it was 203 x 300 pixels. I pasted my image on a new document that was 100 x 100.
2. I thought the image looked fine the way it was, so I didn't do ANY blurring, sharpening, anything.
3. Next I applied some Curves.

Set this layer to Normal, Opacity 100.
My result:
By doing this, I brightened up my image considerably without having to use a Screen layer. It doesn't look so great now but it will look better.
4. Next, I added a Selective Color Layer.
Reds
Cyan: +100 Magenta: +21 Yellow: +100 Black: +29
Yellows
Cyan: +100 Magenta: +8 Yellow: -55 Black: 0
Neutrals
Cyan: +100 Magenta: +11 Yellow: -34 Black: -6
Set that to Normal, Opacity 100.
Much better, right?
5. I added another Selective Color Layer.
Reds
Cyan: -100 Magenta: +34 Yellow: +100 Black: +100
Yellows
Cyan: -49 Magneta: -15 Yellow: -29 Black: -55
Cyans
Cyan: +70 Magenta: -54 Yellow: -71 Black: +100
Blues
Cyan: +97 Magenta: +17 Yellow: +17 Black: -22
Magentas
Cyan: -100
Neutrals
Cyan: +100 Magenta: -1 Yellow: -12 Black:0
I set this layer to Normal, Opacity 50.
6. I duplicated the second Selective Color Layer 3 times. All set to Normal, Opacity 50.
7. One more Selective Color Layer. :D
Reds
Yellow: +32 Black: +7
Yellows
Cyan: +100 Magenta: +100 Yellow: +100 Black: +100
Set that layer to Normal, Opacity 100.
Then I did the command Ctrl+Shift+Alt+e which pasted my overall image on to one layer. I didn't think I needed anything else so I left the icon the way it was.
My finished icon:

I hope this tutorial helped you out. Remember, please do not copy this tutorial exactly. If I see that other people have copied my stuff exactly, it makes me not want to make tutorials, so please for others, do not copy!
P.S. I'd love to see what you've made from this tutorial!
