Polaroids OH my!!

Jul 13, 2006 10:01

I searched through the memories and searched for how to use the polaroid brushes to the fullest effect.
After struggling to figure how to use it, I figured it out with simple steps! It was so easy! I do not see why it could not apply to other brushes to similar effects.

How to go from here:
and NOT to here:

This is made in PS Elements 4.0. Please bear with my screencaps, I do not know how to capture directly from Photoshop. So I hope I can explain exactly what to do. Please let me know if it's translatable. There is one step that I'm not sure if it's available for GIMP/PSP, but I'll do my best to translate it for you guys! Screen capture from cap_it, polaroid from rxyangl

Here we go!

Start with an icon you want, Like so:

This is your BASE or Background Layer.
Create a NEW Fill layer. Make the background WHITE. This is Brush Layer.
Use your Brush on that layer. Like so:

Here's the fun part!
FOR PS USERS: using a magic wand, select the BLACK portion of the polaroid. Then INVERSE. This will select everything else BUT the black portion.
FOR GIMP/PSP USERS: using a rectangle marquee tool, do the best you can to draw a square/rectangle around the black portion. INVERSE selection. This should select everything BUT the black portion of the polaroid.

Now, go back to the BASE layer. Leave the brush layer alone. Even though it's visible (if you want to make the brush layer invisible, then do it.

The SELECTION that you just made should be on the base layer. Select a big round brush, make the color black (if you want a different color effect, that can work, I haven't tried that yet). PAINT ALL OVER the BASE layer. You should notice that only the Selected part of the icon is painted over. Like so:

EDIT: You can also just click DELETE to "erase" the selection. Just make sure the background is set on BLACK though. :-) Thanks for the comment, lieyourtruth
Now make the brush layer visible. Set the BRUSH LAYER at Screen 100% Opacity.

That leaves you a beautiful icon with Perfect Polaroid capture!

Hope this was of help!! I think this should apply to other brushes that you don't want the picture to show through the gray parts of the brushes.

Is there a tutorial on how to MAKE a tutorial? I'll try looking, though...;-D
