My First Tutorial!

Jul 13, 2006 12:15

I must apologize in advance if anything in this tutorial is blatantly obvious. I'm fairly new to using PS for icons, and this is my first tutorial... so I wanted to make something plain and easy to follow, something that even beginners can use (I hope!). If you have any suggestions or critiques, pleeeease let me know. :D

>>>>>
using Photoshop 7.0.

Step 01 >>>

Find your image, crop it, and create your base. I'm using a screen cap of Kyon from The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi.

Step 02 >>>

Go to Layer > Duplicate Layer. Set this layer to Color Dodge at 100%.

Step 03 >>>

Duplicate the base again. Set this layer to Darken at 49%.

Step 04 >>>

Go to Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color, and use color #BACC4E. Set it to Linear Burn at 33%.

Step 05 >>>

Create a new layer (open the texture and use your mouse to drag it on top of the icon) using this texture by colorfilter and set it to Linear Burn 100%.

Step 06 >>>

Click on "create new fill or adjustment layer" (it's the fourth button from the left, underneath all your layers). Select "gradient map" and use a black and white gradient. Set it to Lighten at 100%.

Step 07 >>>

Create a new layer using this texture, which is also by colorfilter. Set it to Soft Light 100%.

Step 08 >>>

Once again, duplicate the base layer. Drag it to the top and set it to Screen at 54%.

[Optional] Step 09 >>>

Go to Layer > New > Layer. Use this brush created by pekeana, which can be found here. Leave it set to Normal at 100%, or adjust it to suit your needs. Black border on the second image is added for emphasis, since it's difficult see the border on the white background.

There... all done! Add any additional borders or text as you see fit. ^_^
