Tutorial #1: Shapes and Color
Note: This tutorial works best with high quality images.

1. Get a picture, resize it and crop it within 100x100 px dimensions. I used this picture of Amy Acker, which I got from Amy Acker Web.

2. Duplicate the base layer two times. Set the first layer to screen at 25%. Set the second layer to soft light at 36%. Sharpen the top layer twice.

3. Create a new fill layer and fill it with #181F3B. Set this layer to exclusion at 100%. Create another new fill layer and fill it with #C4C9DE. Set this layer to color burn at 100%.

4. Create a new curves adjustment layer. In the RGB channel, click anywhere on the grid and input these numbers: Input - 103 ; Output - 150

Duplicate the base layer again, set it to soft light at 100% and bring it to the top. Merge all your layers when you've done that by going to Layers > Merge Visible (Shift+Ctrl+E).

5. Next, I used the eyedropper tool to identify one of the seven colors on Amy's shirt. I used the rectangular marquee tool to make a vertical selection on the left of the base layer. I filled this selection with #DDD5B3. I repeated this step until I filled my base up with seven colored, rectangular strips.

6. After that, I duplicated my base layer and brought it to the top. Then, I used the polygonal lasso tool to make an outline around Amy. When I finished with that, I right clicked on my selection and selected, Select Inverse. I hit delete and the pink background behind Amy disappeared.

I also used the magic wand tool to select and delete a little piece of pink between Amy's arm and body .

7. On the very bottom of the Layers palette, I clicked on the "f" symbol and selected stroke. I set the stroke size to 3 px, outside, and used the color white (#FFFFFF). I made a new layer under the top layer (mask of Amy) and went to Edit > Stroke. I set the stroke to 3 px, inside.

8. Then, I created a new fill layer right under the stroke layer and filled it with #181F3B at 25%, exclusion. I created another new fill layer and this time, I filled it with #C4C9DE. I set this layer to color burn at an opacity of 36%.

9. Before adding text, I created a new layer at the very top. I used a heart-shaped brush (from bunny_icons), which I set to a diameter of 35 px, and stamped it on the upper left corner of my transparent new layer in color #D7114F. I set this brush to lighten at 100%.

After that, I created a new layer (on top of the heart brush layer) and used the text box to type AMY in the center of the heart. The font I used was Labtop Secundo, size 12, set to strong.

Then, I clicked on the base and used the eyedropper tool to find three complementary colors from Amy's shirt. I highlighted the letters A, M and Y, and filled them with the three different colors I found on Amy's shirt.

Afterwards, I merged all my layers and created a new gradient layer set at an angle of -140 degrees, with a scale of 100%. I then set this layer to soft light at 100%.

10. Finally, I stamped a tiny text brush (by
chaoticpictures) under AMY in color #D7114F and lowered the opacity to 60%.
