(1) prepare your base, make sure it's not too sharp or too blurred etc




(2) to brighten it up (only if it needs it) I usually use

image > adjustments > auto levels
image > adjustments > auto contrast

and if it's still quite dull copy the base and set it to screen. Th opacity I used was 40%.

(3) layer > new adjustment layer > hue/saturation > saturation : +30 (this may vary depending on your base)

(4) layer > new adjustment layer > selective colour

reds : -100, 0, +10, 0




(5) new solid colour layer > #2A1500 (or a similar dark brown colour) > exclusion at 100%

duplicate this layer then lower the duplicates' opacity to around 60%




(6) add this texture...




...then set it to colour burn at around 18%

(7) merge all layers and this was my final result :
