Here is a bigger preview because I think it looks good on bigger graphics aswell.
Prepare the Icon:
Okay we start with choosing a picture. I choose one of Gaspard Ulliel and crop it.
But now I have a problem because the way I cropped it I have on the left and on the top of the icon some blank space that I don´t want.
There are some different ways to get to the second step.
You can only use one technique or combinate two or three of them.
1.With this picture it´s pretty easy because the background of the picture is in one color so I can just make a new layer,
drag it on top and then select the same color of the background and paint on the new layer where I want more "background"
In this case on the left of Gaspard and above him.
So that it looks like this after this step
2.You can also duplicate the background layer and take the Smudge tool to fill the blank space by smudging over it, you can use this with a background where the background has some lighter or darker places.
You just have to take care that you smudge the light places where the picture would be light and the darker places where it would be darker in the picture. And also try to variate the strength or the smudge tool it looks better then.
It´s a bit hard to explain but you will figure it out it´s pretty easy to use the smudge tool.
3.Or you can really manipulate the background what I did with this icon.
This is the hardest technique and takes some time to figure it out.
As you can see here
I had to add a bit of arm and the background.
I thought that the background is too different so I used the Clone Stamp tool.
I started with the background, first I duplicated the background layer and then I choose a place in the icon that I wanted to copy.
You have press alt + and press the left mouse button and then move the mouse to the place where you want to copy to.
Now you can press the left mouse button again and the place that you wanted to copy should appear. You can move the mouse a bit now and a bit more should appear.
This is how the Clone Stamp tool works just try to copy from different places and not the same places all the time because then it looks like you copied it and that´s not what we want.
The coloring:
1.Merge all you layers at first.
2.Then you duplicate your layer and set it too screen, depends if your icon is light or not so it´s not that neccesary.
3. Add a new Hue/Saturation layer with Reds +10.
4. Add a curves layer and go to Red.
1. Dot: Input : 159 Output: 188
2. Dot: Input:77 Output: 85
5. Add a Brightness/Contrast layer with following settings:
Brightness : -30
Contrast: +5
6. Add a selective coloring layer:
Yellows: 0 ; 0 ; 0 ; + 100
Neutrals: -18 ; 8 ; -12 ; 3
7. Add a levels layer:
RGB:
On the top you add the settings:
25 ; 1,00 ; 242
And on the bottom you add this settings:
38 ; 255
You may have to change this settings a bit.
And you are ready with the first coloring.
If you want the second coloring you add a fill layer with #1D0603
and set it to exclusion.
And you are ready with the second version :P
English isn´t my native language so it´s harder to explain for me than it is anyways so feel free to ask me questions I will try to answer them and help you.
