program used - photoshop cs
translatable - as far as I know it is
psd included

step 1:
Take your image and crop it however you want.
I chose THIS image from spnmedia.net
Even if your image is in colour, it will be black and white on the psd because it is set to grayscale.
If you chose not to use the psd, you need to desaturate your image.
go to image > adjustments > desaturate

step 2:
I created a new curves layer with two points:
input 47, output 56
input 60, output 62
Screencaps are HERE and HERE if you want to see what I mean.

>>

step 3:
Lately I have been liking my icons to be darker.
For this I created a new brightness/contrast layer with these settings:
brightness: -13
contrast: +9
A screencap is HERE if needed.

>>

step 4:
I felt that the icon needed something else,
and yes maybe it needed to be a little lighter. lol.
I added THIS texture by misarte and set it to screen 100% opacity.
Then I adjusted it to where I felt it fit best.

step 5:
Now I wanted to add some text and colour.
Since the mode is set to grayscale (on the psd) you have to merge all your layers (ctrl + shift + E)
and then go to image > mode > RGB color.
For my text I used the font 28 Days Later in the colour #680B0B.
I set it to overlay 100% opacity.

Every image is different so be sure to play around with the settings.

The psd file can be downloaded HERE.
I would love to see other results and some feedback.
I found I liked this tutorial better with screencaps, but I also liked darker icons in the end.

I would very much like it if you let me know how you felt HERE at my graphics journal instead. :)
