My first Icon tutorial :)

Jan 28, 2005 17:07

Well this is my first icon tutorial ever so excuse me if there's something... hard to undersatnd! I hope there's no problem with me posting this.

First of all; For a long time I didn't understand why people shared tutorials when they kept saying DON'T COPY. Now I know. I myself made this and my icons from tutorials. Yep. BUT... as you will see in this one, I combined many things that I've picked up along the way so I suggest you the same. The purpose of this tutorial is to SHOW why you should and how you should take tips instead of copying it full. This should more be a tip or a guideline as to how you SHOULD or could experiment. So I really really hope you have fun and I really really hope you will find it useful. I don't claim anything mine... maybe just the variations that I used and the icon of course. :P

The important credits: I picked these tips and goodies from tutorials from the following artists: crystal_lily, disappearicons and teh_indy !
The picture is mine, and the text used for the icon is from Dante Thomas' 'Get it on'.

We are going to make this icon:

Okay first of all, I had my base image.

I applied a few effects that I ususally do when I make my arts. After that, came the cropping.

Step 1:

I have the image cropped to the proper size, with the alignment that I want.

Step 2:

I took this a gradient from ... I have no clue. This is the only thing that I don't remember where I got it from. SO it's not mine! (I must have picked it up from a tutorial. Sorry. If anyone has an idea, let me know please, I'd appriciate it. This is a gradient so it can be done with PS /or PSP/ but I think I've found it somewhere.) I put it on screen.

Step 3:

I took this gradient. This gradient was made by crystal_lily. She used it for an icon of hers and I LOVED it. So just like in her tutorial, I set it to color burn with the 20% opacity.

After this I duplicated my IMAGE layer, put it above the two gradients and put it on soft light.

Step 4:

Then I took this amazing icon base from  disappearicons and put it on soft light again.

Step 5:

So here we are right now. Yes it indeed does look pretty colorful but no worries.

These last two steps are something that I picked up from the amazing teh_indy . You can find it in the tutorial HERE, although I did it a bit differently and changed the two layers. First I applied this:

This is on multiply, opacity 52%.

Step 6:

Finally came this layer, blending mode: color, opacity 34%.

Step 7:

(Small detail: After that I went back to the icon-base layer (Step 4) and horizontally mirrored it.)

Then came the text and woala;

SO... that's it. All I can suggest is experiment. I spend a lot of time making icons because believe it or not, whenever I want to make something new or different... I simply try almost every blending mode. Takes time yeah, mostly to find the perfect combination but it's fun. Its part of creating something new.

:D

Please, if I did anything wrong, don't kill me, lol. This is my first time posting here and I'm a bit nervous about it so... plz plz be nice if I did anything wrong *smiles shyly*
