I think it should be weekly because it's more convenient in the sense that it's every week and anyone can enter if they have the time. If people lack the time then they just don't enter - no biggie
( ... )
Keep it weekly. It works better that way. If you find that you're having issues with posting things on time, like reminders; voting; and results, then maybe it's time to shop around for a co-mod. It won't hurt you to get some backup so things can run smoothly. Having a contest like this start to drop off when you reach the 50 week mark isn't uncommon. I'm in one that's on week 69 right now and they get about ten entries a week. It doesn't matter one way or another if you get 20 or 30 icons and you can have special categories all the time. What matters is that you're able to have weekly contests with voting.
Keep it weekly. Sure people may enter more but I think it will in the long term kill the communtiy because people will just procrastinate or just simply forget.
That's basically what I think as well; it's the same thing with school. I had a project that got pushed back and back until it was due 2 weeks after the original due date and I still mangaged to do it from 12 till 2 A.M. that morning. :P
Basically, I think the same thing would happen with an icontest if it was bi-weekly. Sure we'd have more time to do it in; but people are so busy nowadays, you just have to do what icedragoncat said and make take to do it in; otherwise it'll never get done. :-/
Keep them weekly, but stagger them. Announce themes on Monday and instead of having the deadline as Friday night, make it Sunday night, and then give the following week to vote. Essentially, you'd have two challenges running concurrently. One challenge would be open to submissions while the previous challenge would be open for voting.
The details and schedule probably need adjusting, but maybe this would be more flexible? I don't know if it would be more or less work for you, but hopefully, it's something worth considering.
Actually, I'm in one contest that announces the next week's challenge the night the voting goes up on Friday. People can vote and have a weekend to work on the next icons. It works fairly well so far. Maybe we can do that here, put both voting and the next challenge up on the same night and give people two more days to work on the icons.
It does work very well. I'm in four icontests three of them Avatar ones and it gives me two extra days to work on icons so that by Monday I'm ready to tackle the other contests. There's only been one week so far where she was late putting up the next challenge by a day but it still gave me plenty of time to work on stuff.

Because, with my luck, it would likely not make me do any icons faster if it was bi-weekly. XD
