Well I have them organized like you do, but I've found myself with the same problem...

I like your idea of dividing them in categories. You wouldn't necesarilly have to rename every icon, you can name the different folders with different names. Or make one big folder with the category name and then add the different sub folders with the texture sets in them.

Something like this:
Textures> Light Textures> Light Textures 49 by iconlover

To be honest, I sort of do and I sort of don't. I have a folder I named Textures in where I keep my pictures and I do put stuff there but I don't always put stuff there. Sometimes I'll download a zip into the documents folder and then I'll just unzip my stuff there in a folder with the same name as the zip but then I'll forget to put the stuff into the texture folder so a lot of times I'm jumping between documents and textures. Even then the textures folder isn't all that organized because I just let loose the first zips I got or just downloaded them one at a time from a website and didn't really bother to take note of where I got them or keep them together by maker. I guess I just do what works for me.

I have things organized in a couple different ways. I do have textures sorted by "Light Textures," "Large Textures," "Neutrals," "Darks," "Pastels," "Brights," "Busy Backgrounds," and so on. I do not bother to track who made what within that framework; the credit for that is found on my Resource page. I tend to know what I've DL'ed from my very favorite makers' work by sight, so I frequently know who made what even if the file names didn't record that info.

For icons, I have turned my favorite icon-sized textures into various pattern sets because they're so much easier to use that way. Because I make the pattern sets from downloaded *.zip files, I have named those by MakerName_Description. That is, I have discolore_AquasBlues.pat and oxoniensis_Clouds.pat and tragicicons_scraps3.pat and tre_set1.pat and so on.

I have a general familiarity with the makers/taxtures themselves, and these are my all time favorites that I return to time and again rather than everything I've ever downloaded, so the indexing is mostly mental.

I have all my textures in folders by colour, black and white, borders, light textures. That way i know where to look if i want a particular colour, or whatever.

I have a "Resource" folder and inside are folders labelled by users and inside are their various sets.

I organize my textures the same way you do. I find that easiest so when you need to credit a certain resource or when others ask where you got a certain texture, you can find it quite quickly.
