Lack of creativity?

So OK I am making an icon and a lot of people would say it's fine, it's simple but fine as it is. But I always want to add more stuff to it, because I think that the "cherry on the top" is missing.

Take this for example...

I'd lighten it up a little off center so the shadow didn't border the entire icon--then I'd call it finished. :D

A lot of the time I end up spending a long time trying all sorts of things that end up looking horrible and then just end up leaving it like it was in the first place. =/

That happens to me a lot of times. Tried this and that and then it takes hours to realize that it was already good in the first place, like you say.

I think that this is part of the reason simple icons are harder to pull off than complicated ones-you have to know when enough really is enough. If you can't think of anything else to add, it's probably because the icon is great as it is. Personally, I really like that sample (even though I'm not a part of that fandom). :)

Thank you!

I agree that's the hardest. Sometimes people prefer cluttered icons, sometimes totally simple one. It's difficult to find a middle way IMO.

Happens to me all the time - I force myself to to write in something clever so it doesn't look like a base.

Well text, font choice and placement is another topic. I prefer to make textless one.

Well you were saying that you feel like the 'cherry on top' is missing. Since I love plain icons (not exclusively of course) I would consider the icon you posted as 'finished'. I don't use textures a lot nor do I tend to make complex icons, so my 'cherry on top' usually ends up being text.

well yes, but mostly when I make icons for challenges I have that feeling or when I make icons for the public.

I use pretty much lot of textures. *lol*
