On the Suject of Headers and Banners

A topic in another icon related community got me to thinking about headers and banners. People in that discussion claim that headers and banners are so hard to do that it takes them hours to complete just one. This leads me to believe that everyone else who makes headers are always creating image blends for their journal and user info headers. I ( Read more... )

At least one person when listing off a bunch of things that went into a header mentioned image blends. I could be misinterpreting what it is that's being discussed there but I haven't spent two hours (the time someone mentioned) on a single banner before. Sure I've spent maybe an hour at the most but that was because I made one with several smaller images that were than placed on a solid background.

I have no problem with how people do their headers and the like but I got this stigma from one person that using icon techniques on headers and other larger graphics isn't accepted.

I'm more curious than anything because the majority of my larger graphics end up on places outside of LJ so I don't know what what the current way of doing things amongst LJ graphics makers happens to be.

Thanks to people posting more large textures, brushes etc it should be no problem to do the same technics on larger images. Before there were hardly any large textures and that sort. When you follow a tutorial your supposed to use the textures provided or similar one, otherwise wouldn't it be another outcome? It was quite difficult to apply 100x100 brushes, textures etc. on larger graphics. That's the only problem I see. Patterns, gradients, simple color layers and whatever can be applied on any size.

As for blends, I figured a lot of people think there mustn't be empty space on a banner or even icon and then they blend it the most unnecessary stuff just to fill it. In banners you have more space and people probably feel tempted to blend there. But blends can look good a lot of times, but they are definitely not necessary.

I haven't heard it frowned upon on LJ. Different people make different types of banners. Sometimes the same person makes different types of banners, with blends and without. xD It just depends on the person's choice, and to be honest I personally rarely use banners that have blends in them.
