I was just wondering if many people used laptops to make icons or graphics in general? I just switched from a regular desktop screen to a laptop and the brightness is rather jarring. If anyone has any pointers on making icons and not making them glaringly bright or really dull on other monitors, it'll be appreciated. =)

Ah, I had a hard time when I moved to a laptop. I still use the desktop so I normally check on both computers and find the middle of the brightness. But I also have a rather new LCD screen for my desktop.

Another thing I did was push the contrast on my laptop down a few bars, making it both easier on the eyes and icons.

I cannot icon on the laptop without a mouse, though. I cannot work PS with a touchpad!

I've been using a laptop for years, widescreen - so much better than a desktop :)

I've been making icons and other graphics on my laptop for almost three years. Migrating to the laptop was not really all that hard for me, but that might be because I started making icons and graphics around the time I got it. The touchpad took some time for me to get used to, but I can do most PS/PSP tasks on it with ease. Unless you absolutely can't adjust with the touchpad, I don't think you need a mouse.

If the brightness is too high, I'd put it down to a comfortable level, or at some sort standard level of brightness (bright enough so you won't make overly contrasting or dull icons but reasonable that it doesn't burn your eyes in the process). I agree with one of the previous comments that mentioned comparing your laptop's monitor with another monitor. You could also play around with the contrast of the screen and get the screen settings desired. Sometimes I find simply tilting the monitor closer or farther away from me changes the way my graphics will look, so maybe you could try that out too?

Hope this was somewhat

I make icons on a laptop too. =) I use a regular mouse because certain things, like cropping, are a pain with the touchpad. I usually don't worry too much about how my icons look to someone else--if they look good to me, then they're bound to look good to at least a dozen others. xD
