I'm rereading parts of Drums of Autumn and, damn son, Gabaldon is obsessed with genealogy. I don't actually know if you ever read any of the books but you know that Roger is like the great-great-great grandchild of Dougal and the best witch ever. And the genes are so strong that not only does he have Geillis's eyes, no, he is a Viking beast like Dougal! I thought it might please you to hear him described as such, though poor Ragnar might roll his eyes and have them for breakfast.
Weeeell, they would benefit from a bit of strict editing, especially later instalments. I stopped after the fourth book. I think I'd go on reading if I found Brianna tolerable. She, Roger and their offspring are becoming more central to the story and I'm just not interested in them. This is definitely down to personal preference - as we all know, I would rather write another thesis than give birth and bring up a child. And child characters are so rarely well-written
