well, it was in the default set in my PS CS2..
And it actually depends on the color you're using. Maybe if you try to set the color to white on the new layer and re-open this, you'll see it?

I tried, but nothing happened. The colour stayed the same.

actually, that the 'foreground to transparent' gradient....so whatever you have selected as your foreground colour will gradient to transparent.
