Learn how to go from
to
in PS 7

Crop your base to 100 x 100 pxls. Use Auto Levels and Auto Contrast.

Create a new flood layer with this color (#007894) and set it to exclusion.

Paste this texture (by gender) and set it to multiply.

Paste this gradient and set it to soft light

Create a new flood fill layer with this color (#1E2147) and set it to exclusion.

Duplicate the dark blue layer and move it to the top. Set it to screen.

Duplicate your base and move it to the top. Set it to overlay.

Duplicate your base again, move to the top, and desaturate it. Set it to soft light. You can leave it here, if you want and add tini-text or whatever. :D But, we're moving on.

Here's where it gets a little tricky. Since I don't know how to do masks, I do this my own way. :D

Create a new layer and flood-fill it with white (#ffffff). Then, add a border brush in black. I believe this one is by inxsomniax. I set this new layer on screen.

PLEASE DON'T USE THIS TEXTURE FOR YOUR ICON.

Now, to get the picture of Yuugi to show up on the front, I did a number of things. First, I created a new document. You can do so by clicking this button. This will create two of the same document. Merge the layers of the new document and copy/paste it into your original icon. Set it to about 30% opacity and erase everything you don't want to overlap, like this. Set it back to 100% opacity when you're done.

Another way to do this, is to simply erase the center of the border box. But I didn't like the way it turned out as much as the way I did it.

Add your text, and you're done! :D I used these settings of Book Antiqua.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Lemme know what you get out of the tutorial, but please don't copy the icon completely. :D
