The night is dark

The wind is blowing

The moon is out

The shadows are growing

I’m trapped in my house

Curled up in a ball

I’m quiet as a mouse

My back is to the wall

I can hear my breath

Can hear my own heart beating

I can hear the screams

…but they’re fleeting

I haven’t moved in half an hour

My body’s tense and tight

Want to move but I’m waiting

Ooo! I wasn't sure what I was getting into when I clicked here and just kept reading. I think the turning point for me in this from "yeah, it's good" to "oooo, awesome" was:

Worse than the walking dead
That mindless zombie flock
Are those that tap at my windows
The ones who stand at my door and knock

Zombies are creepy enough, but they're just mindless monsters. Introduce sentience, though, and suddenly you've got a villain. I loved it!
