We're all doing a big collective "aw, crap" about this (even though I don't have to commute from the East Bay, either).
As my friend said, it seems like the MacArthur maze bites it on a surprisingly regular basis. They just got the Loma Prieta quake damage fixed when I was at Berkeley.
When BART went on strike, the loss of the cross-bay train completely jacked things. I can't quite visualize how this is going to break the commute. We spent a fun fifteen minutes just now figuring out exactly where the break happened, then did another collective, "Oh, my..." about it.
And yeah, there are even better images of the freeway looking like cloth. Basically, all the rebar melted, so the freeway melted.
