I love Dallas and Austin, and have spent time in both cities. My only visit to Ft. Worth was to go to the zoo, where I nearly threw up after a monkey shit in his hand and started eating it (I think I mentioned this on LJ a few years back...)
Fort Worth rather unexpectedly became an epicenter of gay discrimination last month, between the Rainbow Lounge raid and the Baptist church first getting kicked out of the SBC and then having a youth trip canceled by the conservative Baptist college they were going to do mission work for.
The story has somewhat died down in the local media, now that Chad Gibson is out of the hospital, but luckily, it's still being talked about. I'm heartened that the mayor (who I don't particularly like, but voted to re-elect, since I didn't like his competitors, either) asked the US Attorney's office to review the police's internal report, to ensure there won't be a whitewashing.
I really hope that this might lead to the elimination of the TABC, or at least a reduction in their powers. But that might be asking too much.
I was still living in Fayetteville, AR when the TABC started their puzzling raids. I was in Dallas every few months visiting a friend from college. Texas is a lot of fun. I got a tattoo one spring break in Deep Ellum, which I'm still saving up to get lasered off. :-P
I'd love to see the TABC neutered and I'm hoping Kay Bailey knocks off Rick next year.
I'm probably going to cross over and vote in the GOP primary to help ensure that happens. I'm not a huge KBH fan, but she's about a billion times better than Governor Goodhair.
I like Fort Worth (and even like the FW Zoo--a friend had his wedding reception there a couple years ago), but my heart will always be with the Dallas side of the Metroplex.

So yeah that's my lasting memory of the city.
