They rushed it out the door before everything was ready and thought-through. Then, botched the roll-out. Public lost confidence, they backed down from forcing it on their big business clients, who JUST went to XP a few years back. Then, hardware manufacturers didn't want to spend the cash to get ALL their products Vista ready since it wasn't being widely adopted.
Then, Microsoft gave up and decided to pour their efforts into Windows 7.
yep, except ME never angled for the business market. In some ways, XP was too successful. Microsoft wanted Dell/HP/etc to ship ONLY with Vista when it was launched. They probably could have rolled over the consumer market fairly easily. It was the business clients that really stood fast, and told them hell no, give us a downgrade path. The more OS's floating around the costlier, the support. They didn't want to upgrade to Vista especially since XP Pro was finally just entering maintenance cycles in a good number of big shops.
If it provides you any solace, I have been using the release candidate of Windows 7 for a few weeks now and I think they've thoroughly improved upon VIsta, with all the implications of my word choice to be noted. Windows 7 is being released this fall to the public, if I'm not mistaken. However, I also feel obligated to suggest you have gotten a Mac instead: You should have gotten a Mac instead.
This cost half as much as the Macbook I wanted. Trust me, the next one will be a Mac. The iPhone has completely melted my cold, dark PC heart and convinced me that the Apple Store is paradise.
I had this computer for about three months before it committed suicide. Wouldn't boot, wouldn't do anything. My computer person basically said that they could fix it, but that they didn't feel comfortable reinstalling Vista, and how would I feel about going back to XP. I said fine and I haven't had a problem since.
People told me before I bought this computer that I should wait until it came pre-installed with XP. I needed a new laptop quick and ignored that. Now I have to find an XP to put on it, but it's getting "upgraded" soon.
I don't know specifically, but I think Microsoft rushed it and were sloppy with the coding. My Dad never upgraded his computer from XP to Vista, even though HP sent him an upgrade disc. I don't think he regrets that.

Just my view from the IT sidelines.

It has a couple problems here and there, but the whole thing doesn't go splodey like it did when I had Vista.
