This colorization tutorial was pretty well-received over at icon_tutorial, so I thought I'd share over here, too. It took me a while to develop this technique, and I hope it'll help people who think colorization's a pain.
Lovely tutorial - can't wait to try out those techniques!
Um... can I just ask something? Why are you saving this as a .gif? Is there a specific reason? If you saved the finished icon as a .png file, the quality would be so much better.
Just force of habit, I think. I do it kind of automatically... I think because .gif's are smaller than .png's, although not by much. I may do that in the future, though. Thanks.
They are smaller, but for 100x100 still images, they're generally below 40k. You'll be surprised at the difference - I saved something as .jpg the other day and it made me cringe how grainy it was.
Well, I paused in between to, of course, stop and save the progress, but from start to finish it usually takes me anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours to do a colorization like this, depending on how much detail I go into :)
I know this is a little.. off cause it's not a coloring of a black and white, but I wanted to thank you SO much for taking the time to post this tutorial. It was simple, effective, and very clear that even I could follow it. (I've read a few of the colorization ones and couldn't get the hang of it.)
I remembered (and have this favorite placed) this tutorial while working on one of my photographs, I wanted his hair darker to give him more of the "in game" look, but the usual bright/contrast and whatnot was making the rest of him too dark so I tried this and it worked perfect! I didn't have to compromise the rest of the coloring and got into it. So thank you!!
Here's the difference, the first icon was without, and the second ones I used your coloring technique. :)
