Okay, I love seeing tutorials, even if I don't usually use them. But I don't know about ya'll, but here's some random tutorials anyways. =D Maybe no one wants to make icons like mine, maybe they're not helpful, but I enjoy them, so here are some.
I'll admit - some of these might bear some similarity to tutorials by other people. I don't always recall where I originally picked up layer ideas, so there might be a few similarities here and there. I apologize.
(I made this first one a while ago. I know it'll probably have less people digging it because it's so old, but I've thrown out too many tutorials because they were too old so I promised I wouldn't do that to this one.)
First,
I start by cropping this pretty Yubinbasya doujinshi picture of Cloud.
It's way too pale, I don't like the contrast one bit. I duplicate that layer, and play with the contrast. I then set it to Multiply.
I duplicate that layer, and play with the contrast and the saturation some, until I get as such. I set that to Soft Light.
I take this base. It's one of
immoral's bases from
this post. It's 95. As you can see, I've messed with the colour and the contrast some, and erased half of it. I actually did this in a previous icon (I can't recall which), and just liked the look of it. This icon lacked something, so I pulled it from over there, and smacked it here. For this purposes, I've put a black background behind it, so that you can get the same results I did, even though I'd erased part of it. I set it to Screen.
I dig that look that doesn't have pure white to it, so my next layer is a 50% Darken layer, of this colour.
Colour Dodge, 33%.
Soft Light, 70%
Overlay, 73%
A border. =D Annnd, we're done!
Next, this Zack icon.
The base is from an official art scan, but it's not the greatest quality. =(
First we take this texture by bombay. I used unsharp mask on it and played with the contrast a little to produce the look it has now.
Screen, 100%
The base, duplicated and desaturated. Overlay 69%
The text and the border. Border is 2px, text is courier new.
The desatured base duplicate from earlier, blurred. Overlay 29%
This step is a little odd. It's #EBD593, but cut-out around the foreground, as you can see. Multiply, 29%
The same colour, erased with a blurry erase tool so that it's only on the edges sort of. Saturation 100%
The same desaturated base again, set on Screen 16%
#9393EB Softlight 77%
#EF93EB Colour Burn 22%
A sort of half-assed texture I made myself with blur and fucking with stuff and erasing not quite correctly. Yes I know it's ugly by itself. xD Screen 100%
Start with
Duplicate 1, set to Soft light.
#FFC0B6 set to Soft light 89%
#4FAEDE set to Color Burn 17%
#00005A set to Exclusion 100%
Random thing (I don't even recall what) blurred out of recognition, then drawn on with soft brushes and sharpened for no real reason set to Screen 100%
