icon history meme

So, there's this meme where you basically show people your old icons. I only have like twenty posts in this journal, so I'm not going to bother with the ones from here, but the ones from my even older icon journal.

These are from way, way back in 2003. Big trends then were pixel fonts and total fugliness. Mine were fuglier than most. The first icon there is the first I ever made, in MS Paint. I know I also made the JRM "Crazy" icon in Paint. The things I miss from this time is my ability to think of somewhat humorous things to say and my willingness to just go for it with animated icons, which I currently find to be a pain in the ass. But, I mean, come on, the Bothan icon is priceless.

I made some friends-only banners too, which I quickly abandoned because I never use them so have no desire to make them. You can see my burgeoning blending ability here.

These are from 2004. Fugliness continued to prevail, but I gave up on the grid texture (THANK GOD) and learned how to use fonts other than pixel fonts. Some of these I actually still like (the gold bikini one, the Sound of Music one, some of the Tinkerbell ones). That James McAvoy icon (10) has gone through SO MANY variations over the years... I really need to go back and make a new one. For a long time it was purple with scan lines. Oh yeah. You can see the genesis of the way I use text here, as well as my occasional obsession with color washes (though thanks to the blue exclusion layer trend, they weren't very bright here). You can also see my weird bondage phase, which is still going on in my head but thankfully hasn't been committed to graphical form recently. This was also possibly the height of my near-insatiable thirst for fairytales. I have omitted all the Paris Hilton icons because you don't need to know about those.

Compare to some from 2009:

Thank god I improved.

So. Yeah. Those are my hilarious and fugly beginnings as an iconmaker.
