Thoughts on Battlestar Galactica and Speculations on the Final Cylon

IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED THROUGH THE END OF SEASON 3/BEGINNING OF SEASON 4 OF BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, DO NOT READ THIS POST. You have been warned.

Because I am a GIANT NERD, I spent far too much of my time over the past few days discussing various hypotheses about Battlestar Galactica with dizzykungfu. I'm going to be even more of a GIANT NERD and distill ( Read more... )

It seems to me that Kara Thrace (I'm starting this as you begin to discuss her) is so obviously the last Cylon model that she can't be. Also, remember that the Simon did a gyn exam to check her fertility and pronounced her fit to be an incubator -- though he didn't quite put it that way.

*I*'m wondering if Thrace didn't bring the Watchtower signal back with her. It is, after all, a Terran song. (Of course that implies that she is the Master Model...)

Baltar did do his hallucinatory girlfriend from behind once, while he was working on the detector. He was interrupted (LOLGaius -- Invisible Girlfriend) but he did see her from behind.

Bill Adama, remember, was in the original war against the original toasters. We've seen him even before the Cylons lost and resettled. (On the other hand, why would they wait until they'd lost to start another string for their bow? Hmmm ( ... )

Hm, that's true, I'd forgotten that part. But does it make a difference that it was his imaginary girlfriend? Did he ever do the REAL Caprica Six from behind?

Also hm, Ellen Tigh? Interesting. Although the issue I have with that is, again, why have programming that allows two Cylons to be with each other when the Cylons know already that that Cylon-Cylon biological reproduction has not been successful? That's a possibility, though...

To save from writing you a book, I wanted to say one simple thing: the writers have apparently announced and made it clear that the final cylon is NOT IN the picture of the 'last supper bsg". Therefore, Kara, Adama, Laura, Helo, and Lee not that he could really be suspect?) are immediately thrown out the window.

See, that's actually not how I interpreted their words - I felt they still being vague and red-herring-ish enough that most people would assume that that's what they said, although that's not really the case. The words from the article with the Last Supper picture are: "We have not yet revealed the final [unknown] Cylon," and then, in response to 'Does that mean the people already at the table aren't the final Cylon?', "You ferreted that out pretty slyly. I didn't really want to give that away." He's not confirming or denying it, and I think, to keep from giving away spoilers, that's the best way to handle it - provide enough ambiguity that people can argue it both ways. All he's doing is commenting on the deductive reasoning at work - he doesn't come right out and say, "You're right, none of those humans at the table are the final Cylon."

Personally, though, I'm finding the arguments for Tom Zarek to be rather convincing...

You know Nano is over, right?

>One argument is that all of the "high number" cylons (7-12) were designed to be deep under cover in human territory

From everything that I've seen thus far, the final Five cylons are very different from the other models - I don't think that they were part of the original plan to destroy the colonies, and seem to have predated the existing ones. I mean, if they were part of the plan all along, why wouldn't the Cylons use a valuable military asset when the attack was underway?

No, I think that these Cylons are different, very different.

I also have who I think is the final five Cylon, and it helps to tie in why Kara is special (although it's not Kara herself.)

No, I don't think it's Kara, either - like Gaius, it would be too easy. She's obviously integral, though.

It doesn't seem like the final Five were supposed to be part of the annihilation of the human colonies - that seems to have been a plan unique to the known seven - but did they come up with it on their own, or were they prompted into it?

My impression is that they pre-date the other cylons - which makes me wonder about their numbering, of if they even have numbers (I don't remember them being refered to by a specific unit number)

It was said at one point that they had already been to earth, which I suspect ties into the whole "This has happened before, it'll happen again" sort of thing.

The hidden Cylons do not currently have numbers, to the best of my knowledge. But if so, then why not? And if the human Cylons have no numbers, then whatever happened to model #7?

What Ron Moore has said is that the Final Five are "fundamentally different" than the 7 known models. What that is supposed to mean... is anyone's guess!

First of all: I'm NOT reading this entry for a few days yet... I'm only at the beginning of season 4, but I'm so curious to find out your predictions.

And, I'm sorry I didn't get to see you at the tournament. I passed you at one of the more... taxing parts of the day, and by the time I had another berak, y'all had left. I did talk to Adam for a few minutes; I barely recognized him! Anyway, sorry, and I hope you had fun there, and hopefully I'll see you again some other time??

LOLOL START WATCHING NOW! You can still make it before season 4.5 premieres tonight!!

I need to make another post to update to this now that I've watched season 4 - a few things that happened and were said have me pondering further...

No worries - you looked stressed. Hope some coach wasn't being too much of a dick to you :( That's why I got out of reffing - I wasn't even getting PAID to allow people to speak to me like dirt, so I was soooooo done with that!

It was great to catch up with a bunch of people I haven't seen in so long. It was nice to absorb some fencing vibes even if I'm out of the sport for now - and won't be back into it for at least a little while anyway. See you soon, I hope :)

Whew. Just spent most of MLK day catching up on BSG. So now I suppose we both know who the last cylon is (and I'll avoid writing it down, in case other people aren't caught up).

Yeah, some coach was giving me some shit. It wasn't quite as bad as last year though, and oddly enough, the coach that made me cry last year was actually complimenting me (to coach and the bout committee as well as to my face) this year. Weird. But now that I'm a semi-official coach, I actually get paid enough to put up with that shit.

Hope everything is going well with you!

I approve of your method of commemorating our most famous civil rights leader! :D

I think their should be a rule for refs: If a coach makes you cry, then you get to give them a black card. Heh.
