We had middling success in terms of finding anything to dig up - we were actually getting too many hits as opposed to too few - but as I was driving us to the next place I thought might be a good candidate, a town park, I passed a rarely-taken road ( Read more... )

It is REALLY creepy, honestly. All the ragweed and sumac and poison ivy was growing up around it, sprawling over the boarded windows and cracking the old sidewalks, which had nearly vanished. The place shut down in 1992, so it's been an unused derelict for 18 years now ( ... )

Yeah, that's one reason (of many) why we didn't go in. We figured there wouldn't be any harm in just walking around the building (there was another carload of people doing that when we arrived, and there was another SUV parked there that turned out to belong to a family with 2 kids who had been out on the bike path) and looking at it.

I'm not surprised the police would check on the place fairly often - there's an immense network of tunnels under the ground here that used to extend to all the different buildings. In addition to the broken-open window, there were also several locks on all the doors that had been broken or tampered with and replaced with new locks. Even the newest lock showed signs of someone having tried to cut through it or chip out the wood around the latch.
