Jo Ann Beard does more than evoke my teenage years in her new novel IN ZANESVILLE, she seems to have lived them right alongside me. No, inside me. Every observation, fleeting thought, insecurity, earnestness. An amazing book, especially if you were a teenager in the 1970s, or a teenager...ever.

Aw, shucks, Tracy. Let me know what you think. There's no plot to speak of. Beard simply follows this girl through the daily suckiness of family, school, and friends and somehow makes it profound and funny and very very real.

Different strokes... I liked the humor but not much else. I wanted a plot, I didn't like any of the characters much, and the thing with the teacher was so icky.

I certainly wouldn't want every story to be so low key, Debbie, but I liked how she kept the story at a simmer, the whole family-especially the father-bumbling along.
