The Idealistic world...

I am interested in finding out if rationals and idealists essentially have the same aspirations for improving the planet - socially, politically and environmentally.

What are the main things you would like to change about the world?

I think I pretty much agree with that.

Apathy is a major problem, but so is passion. The members of extremist groups are quite passionate and that causes so much of the violence and hatred in the world.

If I could change anything, I'd balance them so people cared enough to act when action was warranted but not enough for them to try to force their opinions onto everyone around them.

I'm not one to go tilting at the world's windmills and try to rearrange it to make it all work. Perhaps that's apathy, but really I'm just not suited for it. For me, inner work, inner seeking is the strongest attractor. To touch another's soul, to really connect to another person might be the best I could really achieve.

Protecting the environment and all living things, peace, and happiness.

I second this.

But gets mindboggling when you think about it. Should we just live from photosynthesis?
Or vitamins and plastic food?

I vaguely think of protecting the environment as controlling the harm we do to it, since there always must be some. Polluting as little as possible, limiting consumption, and protecting areas for preservation, as well as taking extra care to protect endangered and threatened species from extinction. Of course we must kill some plants, encroach on some habitats (even though I really don't think we need any more expansion and could be reducing the development that has been done), and release some pollution, but the more limited the better.

I would like all people to be friends, or at least respect each other. And live healthy happy lives.

I would change the education system. Start with education for parents (communication skills, stress-relief, work on self, healthy living...), promote healthy ways of living, communication, eating... everywhere. In media too.

I would change the distribution of money, and perception of money and material things.

I would change laws to protect the environment and human & animal rights.

I would fund research for alternative means of fuel, energy production...

Its not an answer for your question, but as far Idealists and Rationals having "the same aspirations for improving the planet", I would just like to point out that Idealists and Rationals are going to be largely the ONLY people with "aspirations for improving the planet".

Of course there is a huge spectrum and even conflicting aspirations. As to whether the set of Idealist Aspirations is equal to the set of Rational Aspirations.... that for every Idealist with aspiration X, there is some distinctly-paired Rational who shares it (and vice versa).... I would say that's unlikely... but possible...

I know a number of people who are interested in improving the world--and only some of them fit into these two categories.. in particular, my better half is an esfp artisan, and she is one of the most caring, ambitious, driven, and compassionate people I know...

... and very importantly for me, she is actually very effective at doing good things because instead of just talking about dreams and ideals, she fucking does a lot of stuff.. her world is action and concrete reality..

It takes all types..

If I had to judge all of my accumulated experiences with my partner, I would say that her aspirations have become less static as she has gotten older... she has become more open to ideas and such things ( ... )
