I appreciate the essential meaninglessness of Halloween. It appears to be about costumes and candy at first glance, and that turns out to be exactly correct. Even the media -- notorious for injecting politics and bathos into the most unlikely subjects -- can't seem to find anything deeper in this holiday. I agree. I'm tired of every little girl costume being a sequined bra with the word "slut" on it. A princess gown is gender-typed, but at least in a dress little girls won't be offered more than their fair share of van candy.

In the interest of sexual equality, when Sheila and I start a family we're going to dress our daughter as a pumpkin and our dog as a wench/tart. I will escort them dressed as Snow White, and Sheila will stay home eating all the Halloween candy in a novelty shirt that says "Free Moustache Rides". It is our feeling that this will stick it to the Man.
