Love stories aimed for guys! I think you are right about them--they tend to be very clear-cut, these-are-the-two-who-are-supposed-to-get-together, and it's not even about the journey--it tends to evolve down a very straight path (versus say the "traditional" chick flick trope of "last-minute misunderstanding almost ruining everything") that hits all the right points, caring less about nuanced character development (because the romance is always secondary to the plot anyway).

I like your point about viable options. The problem with love triangles is that they tend to be used a drama device and also tend to get dragged out to the point of distorting the characters. At least in my view.

Yes, yes, all of this.

See, I do not enjoy triangles, and mainly do not understand them. However, as a device, it does seem a symbol of choice that is missing in a lot of "traditional" stories.

Jane Austen didn't do "triangles" but she did give her leading women choices, however inequal the attraction of those involved...
