Brain Candy

I watched Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon while carding wool and spinning today.

I really wanted to watch something straight-up in that vein, because I'm interested in the genre to an extent and actually moreso now I've watched more of the fusion-historical dramas with strains of martial-arts-movie in them.

I heard a lot about the movie when it came ( Read more... )

He also directed Brokeback Mountain. Just to sufficiently blow your mind. :P

Yeah, I saw that, too! The commonality with those three (and Life of Pi) is that they're all novel adaptations. So, gorgeously filmed reconstructions of previously existing work, it makes sense...

IF ONLY I DIDN'T HATE LIFE OF PI so much. I have no doubt that it will be absolutely GORGEOUS, but I will wait to find out what he does with the story before I decide to see it or not.

That being said, oh my goodness, CTHD. I've seen it one and three-quarters times--the last time I tried to watch it I couldn't finish it because I knew how sad it was in the end. But it's so gorgeous and so good.

I own the book but haven't read it and think that it's probably not my cup of tea, either...I should bring that in for trade credit at the bookstore. XD

It looks gorgeous but it also looks surreal and literary and actually Ang Lee is the one thing really going for it at this point.

If you liked CDHD, you might look up a movie called HERO. A lot of that unbelievable swordfighting and flying, etc., but but each battle is a different story that is being told and each has it's own color scheme; a blue grey fight taking place in the rain, a green battle in a forest setting, and my favorite, a yellow/red/orange story taking place in a beautiful autumnal wood.

Silly, but hard to take your eyes off of. It's like a series of moving paintings.

Oh, that does sound pretty cool. I think these kind of movies are something I crave for unapologetic EPIC, so slightly over-the-top battle scenes are okay!
I am looking for recommendations, so thanks! And I welcome others...

HERO is by far my favorite of the three wuxia films that had splashy US debuts around that time. (Actually it's tied with Gosford Park for my single favorite movie of all time.) SO AMAZING. The storytelling (almost more than the visuals) completely blew my mind.
