Appearance:
Jounouchi is tall, around 5'10" (exactly 178cm), and thin--canon says 62kg which is ridiculously thin but he's probably lost some weight due to the conditions at Discedo. He has moppish blond hair and brown eyes. He dresses very casually, when not in his school uniform, he wears layered shirts and jeans and sometimes a letterman jacket. He always wears Air Muscle sneakers, one of which has a hole in it from where it was stabbed.
Background: Jounouchi had a pretty rough childhood, growing up in a poor dysfunctional family in Domino City, Japan. Due to his father's alcoholism and gambling problems, his parents divorced. His mother took his younger sister, Shizuka, with her and left him with his father, where he continued to live in poverty due to his father's addictions.
Jounouchi grew up on the streets. He became a street thug and hung out with gangs, Hirutani's in particular, for long periods of time during middle school. It was his live on the streets and his exposure to gangs led him to get into many fights and develop his excellent fighting skills. While he wasn't hanging out with gangs, he developed a friendship with and would spend time with Hiroto Honda. Also during middle school he was the only paperboy, as the school had permitted him to work multiple jobs in order to pay off his father's debts.
At school, Jounouchi and Honda were bullies, and would often bully Yuugi Mutou. Yuugi's personality annoyed him, and so he claimed his bullying would teach Yuugi how to "be a man." It was his first year at Domino high school when he befriended Yuugi Mutou. They were both in the same class, class 1-B, and he and Honda were bullying Yuugi as per usual. At the time, Yuugi was working on the Millennium Puzzle and the two bullies swiped the box from him. They got told off by Yuugi's friend, Anzu Masaki and quickly left the room; however, Jounouchi managed to secretly take a piece beforehand. Sickened by Yuugi's obsession with finishing the puzzle, he throws the piece into the canal outside their school. Tetsu Ushio, the school hall monitor, had suspected the duo was bullying Yuugi and appointed himself Yuugi's bodyguard. Without Yuugi's permission or knowledge beforehand, he beat the ever-loving shit out of Jounouchi and Honda. Yuugi tried to stop Ushio, claiming they were trying to teach him to be a man and not actually bullying them which resulted in Yuugi also getting his ass kicked. Inspired by Yuugi's kindness and caring, he altered his view of the vertically challenged boy and retrieved the puzzle piece from the canal and gave it to Yuugi's grandfather to give to Yuugi. The following morning, he answered Yuugi's riddle in the most cheesy way possible and the two were friends from then on out.
A few days later, a morning special was being filmed by ZTV at Domino High School. Jounouchi immediately jumped to the conclusion that there must have been an idol at their school and promptly started spreading rumors. The director staged a bullying scene with Yuugi as the perfect target, and the encounter ended up with Jounouchi beating up the hired bully.
Through Yuugi, he became friends with Anzu and he noticed Anzu was acting off after she avoided walking home with them a few days in a row. Again, jumping to conclusions, he claims that Anzu is dating older women for pay. He and Yuugi, who refuses to believe Jounouchi's claim, decided to investigate by following Anzu after school. They ended up at a fast food joint known as Burger World, and were greeted by their classmate at the door who was working there. Because Jounouchi is such a loudmouth, she's worried that he'll tell everyone she's working there even though it's against school rules. She reveals her reasons for working there, and Jounouchi promises not to tell anyone. Then Anzu is held hostage by an escaped convict. Jounouchi is stuck on the floor behind some really fat guy and unable to help.
Jounouchi first reveals his superstitious nature when he tells Yuugi he's down on his luck because he got hit once while fighting four thugs. YEAH. He goes to a service hosted by a supposed psychic in the hopes of curing his "bad luck." However, he is embarrassed to be one of the few guys there and pretends that Anzu dragged him there. Unfortunately for him, the psychic is completely useless and just told him he was having bad luck. He also helps out with the school carnival, by initially suggesting a cabaret though his idea is outright rejected. When the class decides on carnival games, he helps build the set-up and plays Bluebeard in a lifesize version of a game called Pop-up Pirate. When an upperclassman attempts to steal their spot, Jounouchi attempts to pick a fight with him but gets stuck in the barrel. Epic fail.
His friend and classmate Honda developed a crush on another classmate, and despite Honda's objections, Jounouchi got Yuugi to help them find a gift for her. Yuugi takes them to his family's game shop and together they pick out a love jigsaw puzzle and hide it in the girl, Miho's, desk. Sadly, Miho doesn't find it until Ms. Chono, the bitch substitute teacher, performs a desk check. Whoever the true culprit is will get in trouble with the school so Jounouchi tries to take the blame for the puzzle. In the end, Honda asks her out and gets rejected, and Jounouchi offers to take everyone out for hamburgers to cheer them up, and has kindled a friendship between Yuugi and Honda.
Jounouchi had his eyes on a pair of Air Muscle shoes--a really expensive shoe--and so he dragged Yuugi and Honda to a shady store called the Junky Scorpion to buy a pair. The owner, however, refused to sell Jounouchi the shoes unless he stuck his foot inside one of the shoes while there was a scorpion inside. Being the stubborn genius he is, he did so and the owner oh so generously sold him the shoes at half price (50,000 yen). Shortly after, the trio is jumped by a group of thugs who steal shoes. Anyway, they hunt down the thugs. Jounouchi and Honda beat them up and SURPRISE SURPRISE, they were hired to steal the shoes back by the shop owner. By the time the two get back to the shop to kick some sleaze-ball ass, Yuugi already has already gotten the shoes back from the store owner after a game of mindfuck and scorpion stings.
BECAUSE UP UNTIL THIS POINT THERE HAS GENERALLY BEEN NO UNDERLYING PLOT, some time later, children's card games Duel Monsters is introduced into the series as a watered down tribute to Magic: The Gathering. Jounouchi took up the card game after Yuugi's grandpa introduced it to him as well as showing off his rare Blue Eyes White Dragon card. The following day, he played it with Yuugi. Soon after, their rich billionare classmate Seto Kaiba arrived. Jou invited Kaiba to come play cards with them, but Kaiba was a total dick and just made fun of his cards and told him to get back to him after he collected 10,000. Because that's not nerdy at all. And the day after that, he got his butt handed to him in card-game form by Yuugi and then asked Yuugi for a rematch which distracted Yuugi from approaching Kaiba about stealing his grandfather's Blue Eyes White Dragon Card.
SOON AFTER THAT. Hirutani, the leader of the gang Jounouchi used to hang with in middle school, blackmailed him into rejoining or else he'd beat up Jounouchi's classmates. This resulted in Jounouchi leaving home for two days and missing one day of school. Despite being a pretty awful student, Jounouchi never missed a day of school, which made Honda suspicious. Yuugi, Anzu, and Honda finally find Jounouchi with the gang mugging someone. Yuugi rushed over to plea with him to leave the gang, but Jounouchi pretended he didn't know Yuugi and some other gangster hit Yuugi and then they walked off. Still, Jounouchi was pretty pissed about that and when the gang got back to their hangout, Jounouchi attacked the guy who'd hit Yuugi. Because of Jounouchi's rebellion, Hirutani commanded the rest of the gang to grab Jounouchi and take him to the torture chamber. There, he was tied with his hands above his head and beaten by the other members of the gang and stunned to the point where he can no longer talk and almost death. However, Yuugi and his batshit alter ego arrived just in time to defeat them in a Shadow Game and save Jounouchi's life.
Two months after the discovery of a Pharaoh's tomb, an Ancient Egyptian Exhibit came to the Domino City museum. At school one Saturday Yuugi, Jounouchi, Anzu and Honda decided to go to the museum the next day, even though Jounouchi was all freaked out about mummies and curses. They meet up with Yuugi's grandpa's friend and part of the excavation, Professor Yoshimori. The following day, the news of the death of fellow archeologist Kanekura is revealed, and the group returned to the museum to comfort Yoshimori. However, he'd been possessed and zobmified by Shadi, and started choking Jounouchi in order to bring out the other Yuugi. He is finally freed when Anzu smacked him over the head with a globe. Jounouchi then distracted the zombified professor by taunting him into a chase scene. When there's finally enough distance between the Jounouchi and the zombie from the others, he turned around the corner and punched the zombie in the face, hoping that would keep him down. It didn't work. And so the chase continued until they reached a dead end in a hallway, so he went through the door at the end of that hallway. He grabbed a fire extinguisher and sprayed the professor in the face, but the did absolutely nothing and the zombie knocked the extinguisher out of Jounouchi's hand. The two continued to fight until the zombie pushed him out the window. He hung three stories out a window by a curtain that was starting to break off. INTENSE STUFF GUYS. He noticed Anzu standing motionless on a board on the edge above him. He climbed up, though followed by the professor and held the board up when the rope suspending it started to snap. This led to a major advantage in the Shadow Game between other Yuugi and Shadi because it totally caught Shadi off guard. This also returned Anzu to normal and Jounouchi tried to get her off while the zombie tried to drag Jounouchi down. Yuugi won the Shadow Game against Shadi, hey get the professor back to normal, and then Jounouchi promptly blamed Anzu for the professor's teeth being knocked out.
After Jounouchi got into a knife fight with a Bruce Lee wannabe and won, Mokuba Kaiba--Seto Kaiba's little broski--invited himself and Yuugi over to their mansion upon his older brother's request. Because they are guests, Mokuba treated to them a meal, but he's crazy as fuck and some of the food was poisoned and Jounouchi ate poisoned food. He then forced Yuugi to play a game with him for the antidote and Yuugi won, saving Jounouchi's ass again.
The next day, Kaiba forced Yuugi to partcipate in his Death-T theme park. Yes, that's right. He built an ENTIRE THEME PARK just to kill Yuugi. Jounouchi insisted on helping and Honda, who was there with his nephew, joined the party as well. They ran into Anzu at the first stage of Death-T, who was actually working there. It was a shootout game against three opponents that unknown to them, were hired professional killers. Jounouchi failed at staying put, because he wanted action yo, so he leapt up on the wall and took out an opponent by kicking him in the face. They retreat after realizing their guns had no effect on the hitmen. Jounouchi suggests another sneak attack, however they realized that Anzu's gun wasn't rigged and use that to win Death-T 1.
So they went on to Death-T 2. The first part of Death-T 2 was an electric chair ride in which Jounouchi, Yuugi, Honda, Anzu, and Kaiba's butler--who was running the ride--were strapped into electric chairs. The chairs were supposed to go off if anyone screamed. Though Jounouchi was telling the rest of the group not to scream while he was actually the most likely to do so, due to his fear of the occult and generally stereotypical horror. He ended up fainting before he screamed.
After that, he woke up in Discedo. In the basement of the hospital with all the hot zombie nurses from Silent Hill 2. At first he believed this to be part of Kaiba's Death-T 2, as the horror theme seemed consistent, but soon learned he was trapped. And trapped he was for the next 10 months. He met Bakura, someone who knew him from his future, and learned he'd been there before. He died the week after his arrival. Everyone with chips basically lost their minds and he attacked some guy who knocked him out and left him unconscious and bleeding to become monster food. After the event, he moved out of Hatsuharu's apartment and into the high school. However, he left his stay at the high school after a couple "hauntings" and moved back in with Hatsuharu and Jou lived with him for the rest of his time in Discedo. In the following months, his best friend Yuugi Mutou came and left three times, he almost died in a food shortage/blizzard, saw firsthand countless deaths and horrors, and became a citizen of the nation of Korea.
Personality:
Before befriending Yugi Mutou, Jounouchi was a no good punk-ass kid. He was a bully, taking out his frustrations and self-hatred on others. Becoming friends with Yugi has slowly brought out the best of him.
He states in one chapter that returning the piece of the Millennium puzzle was the first time he actually started to like himself a little; inferring that he still has self-esteem issues. With that said, Jounouchi has become your typical “tough guy with a good heart” anime archetype. From first impression, he appears rude, brash, cocky, rather stupid, and still a troublemaker of sorts. He is truly a caring, incredibly loyal person. He is willing to do just about anything for those he cared about, even if it means he must sacrifice his own happiness and wellbeing. For example, he rejoins Hirutani’s gang in order to protect his friends. When another gang member insults them, he goes as far to beat on the other in their defense.
His sister, Shizuka, is also extremely important to him. He is willing to do just about anything for her, and will later on go to Duelist Kingdom in order to try to pay for her eye operation to stop her from going blind.
He is most certainly a teenager; goofy, perverted and outgoing, but nevertheless bears a great sense of responsibility. He feels as though he has to pay off his father’s gambling debts, and is willing and able to work a number of jobs to do so. While Jounouchi isn’t the brightest individual, that isn’t to say he is unintelligent. He doesn’t apply himself at school, but does have his moments and has plenty of street smarts. Also, anything supernatural or occult, like mummies, scares him.
Why do you want to continue their history here: I'm pulling him out of
discedo . After 10 months in the post apocalypse, he's had plenty of growth and development. He's going to be in pretty bad shape upon arriving, and actually died his first week there (good job right?), but nevertheless has learned how to survive in the post-apocalpyse. He's had to live out some of his worst nightmares, what with ghosts and zombies and whatnot. He's grown somewhat accustomed to people he knows and cares about coming and going without so much as a goodbye. He would know some of the characters on GB that were in Discedo (such as Hatsuharu Sohma). While there, he was declared an official citizen of Korea so Korea could look at his porn stash. Also, he's going to be freaking thrilled to be out of that hellhole.
