i can't either, but only because i've changed the way i say it just so people would stop mocking my pronunciation.

I say both of the latter two.

Congratulations. You've just won the most random LJ poll award!!! :)

In college, I found this rhyming dictionary quite handy:

http://www.rhymer.com/

(btw - it rhymes 'begone' with 'pecan')

personally, i only find the first two acceptable, regardless of whether begone is valid or not. :)

I think I say Lancaster a different way every time I say it. I've had people correct every pronunciation out there, so why bother?

I know in georgia they definitely pronounce it like began... only with emphasis on both syllables so it ends up sounding like pee-can. Georgia is where they grow the damn things so I tend to take their word for it... though being southern they tend to pronounce most things oddly.

Yeah, I think it's one of those regional things. I have always heard pee-can in the south, but my own pronunciation is closer to the begone option.

i've always wanted it to come up on one of those "which accent do i have?" quizzes, 'cause i really have no idea where i picked up beacon. i find a peakin' pie way more appetizing than a pee-can or a pee-con pie.

Yes, I was just about to post that it doesn't rhyme with any of those words (since "began" has a soft e to me).
