whatever it thinks it is, i'm celebrating it like a cookout. since it's still too early in the year for a barbecue (i'm guessing it'll likely still be cold then), i'm thinking this may be the day for a trip to the green forest.

I think it's Unamerican to *not* eat meat.

yeah, that's exactly what it is. Like the smokeout, but with meat.

"2/19: introduce a girl to engineering day. srsly"
Why do you find this offensive? It's not like they're assuming that all women don't think they can be engineers. They're saying that there are very few women in this field and sometimes it's because they think because they are girls they can't be engineers or any other male dominated fields. Many girls are seriously brought up this way and, IMHO, it's very fucked up. I know people who were brought up this way and it's really quite sad.
I think this is an excellent holiday to change the way some girls think about male dominated professions like engineering. :)

well, aside from "girl" generally being reserved for female children as opposed to women of any age (and i somehow doubt that's how it's meant), it's dripping with "chics just don't know what to do without guys showing them everything." as if it's a man's duty to help women advance because we're unable to do it for ourselves, and then men can pat themselves on the back for such a charitable deed.

The word "girl" is used to appeal to the younger generation. The day has to do with K-12 "girls". The logic behind this is that girls need to know that they can do whatever they want with their lives, including be engineers, no matter what society or their parents tell them. I'm also guessing that they will have some role models there for them at whatever events they have, particularly women who are already engineers. This has nothing to do with men feeling better about themselves for showing a girl how to do something. It's just the opposite entirely and, IMHO, is a great program to get the younger female generation ("girls") into engineering. :)

why not an "introduce children to engineering day?" i don't like the focus being placed solely on chics; sure, if you want to spread the word about engineering, do it to everyone equally. singling out any minority for any reason just adds emphasis to the differences between people, and singling out minorities specifically to give them some benefit just makes those not receiving the benefit resentful (hello affirmative action!)

you're just giving me more reasons to be offended!
