Once Burned

More archiving....

This one is pretty old, first posted in 1/03 to hhfic. It was written prior to the airing of HH3, and was my attempt to use the events of HH2 to explain a transition between the HH2 version of Hornblower to a character more consistent with book canon.

HH3 clearly proved that I was definitely not on the same page as the ( Read more... )

Stunning piece with such attention to detail and beautiful character descriptions. I find it hard to consolidate TV with bookverse even just in my head, but you do it wonderfully. Really enjoyed reading this, very moved, thanks again.

And thank YOU!!! I had wondered how the writers would manage to bring film Hornblower back in line with bookverse Hornblower--turns out, they really didn't--but it was fun to try to do so.

I'm so delighted to hear that my take on it worked for you, and I deeply appreciate that you took the time to comment. There's something particularly special about receiving feedback on a piece I considered long forgotten!

Thank you so much for reading, and especially for taking the time to leave a comment: I'm delighted to hear that you enjoyed it. It's such a lovely surprise to find that someone occasionally stumbles across this old journal!

Oh, I like this take on where they might have gone in the next season: letting there be an emotional aftermath to Archie's death, one that both Horatio and William have to work through. I can very much see the actors' anguished little faces! (I'm very fond of the actors and their anguished little faces.)

And a SEA BATTLE. Very competently written, too! That's much harder than it looks -- although it's just as I would expect from you. :-)

(And forgive me, because apparently I don't know this parlance: hanger/hangar is a synonym for -- or a kind of? -- sword, yes? I couldn't quite get it from context, and I'm better with ships than swords, I'm afraid.)

...and do I understand from the story notes that you have EVEN MOAR stories on hhfic that were never archived here on LJ? *covetousness*

Thank you! I'm relieved that you found something to like here. This piece was very much based on the miniseries and the actors. I wrote it at the outset of my foray into fanfic, and it's definitely not what I would write today: it's waaay too overtly emotional ( ... )

I fear you're being much to hard on this poor story. The miniseries is overtly emotional -- so much scenery-chewing! so much anguished shouting! so much carrying each other sobbing through the rain! -- and this reads as a deliberate effort at mimicking that style. However over-the-top the miniseries might be, it is also great sweeping romantic fun, and this story is, too. I had an excellent time.

And this is all of it: I don't have anything else up on hhfic that isn't here.

Ah. I was confused because your story notes refer to an Archie story called "Second Chances," which I didn't see in your masterlist here. Although since I haven't read everything here yet, if you'd changed the title I wouldn't have recognized it.

You might find the book "A Sea of Words" by Dean King to be a useful lexicon for reading/writing in the fandom.Thank you! I've put it on hold. It remains to be seen how much writing I'll do in the fandom -- it's always a battle getting up to speed in a period fandom, and most of my knowledge lies at the other end of the ( ... )

Awww, thank you. As long as you don't take this story too seriously I'm okay with that.

And...well...it's true. Second Chances IS still up on hhfic. I wasn't sure that it was--or if hhfic was even still around! If Once Burned is overly emotional, Second Chances is absolutely overwrought. The Rear Admiral (unnamed, in the story) is a favorite character of mine from another (also unnamed) AoS series: the poor man suffered horribly at the hands of his author. I felt the need to throw him a lifeline, and so provided one in the form of Archie Kennedy.

Should you ever choose to brave it, please keep in mind that it was my very first try at fiction--and it shows. Yikes.
