This is great! I really enjoyed reading it, and it opened my eyes to a lot of things I'd missed (partly, I suspect, because I watched a lot of the film with my eyes closed...). If I ever work up the guts to watch it again, I'll keep all these points in mind.

I'd guess Tarantino is very much an acquired taste in lj fandom - a bit too ironic, a bit too distanced, a bit too (well, a lot too) violent. Not much room for the warm fuzzy feelings. But you bring out the relationship between White and Orange beautifully - I always wondered why he couldn't keep his mouth shut for two minutes longer, because then maybe he'd have survived, but the way you explain it it makes sense.

Hi! Just read your essay. I was discussing the ending with a friend who just saw the movie for the first time, think I'll give her a link to this and maybe quote you, hope you don't mind.

I think you're right about why Orange admits the truth to White at the end. Thanks for the insights!

You're not the only filthy mind around here, trust me.
-laughs-
I honestly can agree with pretty much everything you said, but somewhere along the way, I have the feeling Freddy lost himself. I think he truly became Mr. Orange somewhere between planning the heist and just sort of hanging out. He saw that they weren’t just criminals, they were real people. Maybe he wanted to be both, but realized he couldn't. In the end he admitted it to a man he'd grown close to, a man who'd stood up for him the entire movie.
Then again, maybe that's the fangirl talking. I have the entire W/O complex.
Taking a radical view of the movie without all the squealing, I think you're pretty much right. -shrugs- The only one that really knows though, is Quentin Tarantino, and I get the feeling he's an 'open to interpretation' guy.

Thanks so much for reading and commenting. It's tricky to know what goes on in Orange's head. I think Tarantino did that on purpose to keep everyone guessing. Every time I write about Orange/White, my perspective seems to change and I've noticed that it's shifted more and more in the direction of Freddy losing himself, disappearing into this other guy, Mr. Orange.
