I really believe that Smith is the emotional touchstone of the second season. His emotions are always so close to the surface, unlike the other major characters. We see the most unbearable moments through his eyes: the mass grave and Libby's betrayal.
Smith is such a walking contradiction. He's innocent, yet has seen so much, he's full of both despair and hope, confident and afraid. And he is portrayed brilliantly by Sean Astin!

Maybe Smith's contradictions are indicative of the New World itself. Innocent but worldly, experiencing so much despair yet striving to rise above it. I think Smith is the embodiment of JMS's aim for Jeremiah: to create a show about hope.
