Oh, it'll get bigger. If you would have asked me 8 years ago? I would have probably laughed.

Exactly, I'm glad you said that. Again, I'm not sure HOW it's all going to end up because, obviously, I'm not a fortune teller, but it's all going to end up VERY influential as the whole thing truly is the first of it's kind. Think about it, a common community with the power of the internet....it's gonna be unstoppable.

This is extremely interesting, and really well thought out. I had no idea the guy who came up with 4chan won that vote from Time. xD That kind of amuses me, yet at the same time is somewhat frightening if you think about it -- how much influence on our lives the internet has. Good article! :)

Yeah I hear ya. I was in utter shock when I first came
into contact with that article. It was funny in a very
real way because "anon" very obviously left it's calling
card. It's all so insane and new that it may end being
the coolest thing ever!

If you had said this to the community five six years ago, they would have laughed. I know I would have. But... It is happening. Scares me to think that cosplay is becoming mainstream, or will. I like my obscure hobby.

But, it will be interesting to see what happens.

You what the truly funny part of all of this is? That
the majority of cosplayers are also mid-to hardcore
gamers. Think about that in relation to what I mentioned
above.

in my opinion....

Cosplay will become mainstream in it's own way, because
with the internet, it's slowly becoming as powerful as
the mainstream media. Don't get me wrong, I know "it's
only cosplay" but look at the people driving it. Take
a REAL good look at them for what they are....gamers,
homebrew programmers, 4channers, hackers, people that
by their own means "spread the word" and influence things
to unheard of degrees. (Time magazine article)

Anyone that laughs at something like this either doesn't know, or is too out of touch with the times to matter. At least that's my take on it.

The one thing that gets me, and people don't necessarily realize it, is that cosplay was first coined in 1984. Now, in the last decade or so, it's finally becoming something bigger than anyone imagined their little hobby would. It's been through a similar struggle as the gaming industry. On top of that, it was only considered something an "otaku" would do, which, yes people, that is a negative word. You don't want to ever be associated with it.

But I agree, Cosplay.com and 4chan have made big impacts. I consider them 2 sides to a coin.

I say embrace the "otaku" as it means something slightly
different now. The definition of the word is slowly changing
within the public mind as with words/phrases like
"decimation" or "financial freedom". The meaning of an
"Otaku" too will change. (Well....everywhere else except
Japan obviously. THEY know what it means. lol)

But yeah, that's a good way of putting it. They're both
each other's counterparts. At this point, it's justifiable
to say that one compliments the other to a good extent.
You know as well as I do that either could stand on it's
own but they kind of embody the opposing magnetic poles of the cos-world. Hate it or love it, that's how things are
nowadays right? lol

Very true all! Russia didn't even have a cosplay community worth mentioning two years ago, and how they're producing some of the world's best cosplays and costumers, and inviting American cosplayers as con guests lol But I do wonder how long it'll be until cosplay is in mainstream media. I mean mainstream media, when Cosmode and other magazines actually pay their models for their photos, rather than cosplayers considering it an honor to do it for free. More people are entering the hobby, but the standards for what is constituted "good" are also rising ( ... )

No, the last part I do take your word for it, it's human nature to rant in a backward basement forum when the society around you expects political correctness lol They would certainly fight to keep their subculture alive, and if moot ever shut down the site, they would just flock to another forum (...much like the Latin American drug trade, if you will xD)

What do you think would happen if businesses really got involved in the cosplay scene? I mean REALLY involved, not just the two or three like Funimation or Atlus sponsoring events or contests. It would be fascinating to see if businesses sponsored cosplayers like athletes lol
