he were's a beanie because it's an old custom to wear covering over your head while in a house of worship that dates back to the earliest days of judaism. Since christians are basically jews who believe that the messiah has come then why wouldn't the oldest form of the chirstian church adhere to some of the basic customs of the jewish faith.
