[rp][w/ Elena] finding out about Josef

Sep 25, 2011 17:51

Damon is with Elena. They're in a lounge in the Tower, and he has likely only come over to troll her like he do while she is busy with getting ready for college. He is leaning back in the chair by the fireplace, drinking something alcoholic and searching through the journal for anything important ( Read more... )

The girl's name is Sarah Monroe.

The entry is short and packs a punch despite its brevity. Josef is dead. He asked me to give you something, and you alone. Please get here as fast as you can. There's not much time. There's no way for Elena to know something has happened. She is mostly being Elena while Damon is being Damon, and she gives him looks and smirks from her place and rolls her eyes as he reads the entries out loud. They've tentatively found their way back to the friendship they'd had before what happened. It's not exactly the same, it never could be, but their arguing leads more to bickering than the volatile disputes of late ( ... )

It's short, and it packs a punch, and he still has to read it several times before he is able to react. It hasn't settled in. Who is he to believe some random person on the journal network ( ... )

Elena visibly startles at the announcement.

Her mouth parts open in shock and then she closes it, shaking her head almost imperceptibly. There are many things she could say but there's also so many thoughts swirling around her head. Josef was working with Damon to bring down a potential threat, and now he's dead.

She's immediately on alert for that reason alone.

It's terrible. It's terrible and she feels for this person that she barely knew, understanding how difficult it is for Damon to care for people at all, much less work with them as allies. It's a sign of trust, and Damon doesn't trust people. Then again, Elena also knows what Damon is capable of when he's hurt, and the warning signs go off in her head.

"Damon, I'm--"

And it's a good thing he cuts her off by telling her to get out of the way.

Damon wouldn't want an I'm sorry, but she is. She's so sorry that Josef is dead and it is instinct in her to reach out. Her compassion and her sense of self do not allow for anything else, even if with him it's always been difficult ( ... )

Damon does not trust people easily at all. In fact, he can name the people that he trusts on his hand, and right now--

It was Elena and Josef with some vague trust of Jeremy. There are other people he likes here, that he has regular contact with that he enjoys, but there is no trust. He doesn't hand it out, because it is used against you and the only person he ever felt he could trust for years was himself.

It's a wonder-- it's because of her that he ever started trusting other people at all, and he trusts her and she is all that is left and he has to try to save her from this Society that is so much bigger than him, than them, than this city.

And beyond all that, Josef was his friend, his friend. They never put it into words, but they trusted each other with things that other people wouldn't ( ... )

At some point, much later, Damon returns to the Tower as he is aware that he has to take the compulsion away from Elena. He is also aware that she will be angry, and nothing can really reach him at the moment. Damon has been to the No Name club. He's seen what Josef has left for him, and he feels somehow worse than when he left.

Maybe because he saw the bodies. Maybe because he tortured and there's no violence left in him at the moment (the vampire is always violent and hungry. Who is he kidding?). Maybe because he has had quite a lot to drink but he's still not drunk enough that it doesn't hurt.

He stalks through the Tower looking for her in each hallway, in the places where he thinks she might be though he goes to her room first and then if she isn't there, he'll head to the lounge where he left her.

It is a really good thing that he doesn't run into anyone that wants to fight past the vibe that he is giving out that basically says Don't talk to me unless you want your head ripped from your body.

Elena is furious, but she has been left to stew in her anger long enough it dulls into something close to resigned frustration. She is not leaving the Tower, much as she may want to, and the first thing she did was write an entry to Jeremy to at least ensure he was okay and away from wherever this was happening, since she didn't know and it was another concern.

When Damon finds her in her room, Elena doesn't hit him.

She doesn't hit him, she doesn't yell at him, she doesn't demand that he never do it again. These are all things she would've done at some point without a second thought, except she doesn't have the energy to do them anymore. She can't go back to that back and forth with Damon that never seems to change.

Her levels of understanding have a limit, and he may have lost a friend, but it doesn't excuse what he did. She's done.

Once the compulsion has been lifted, she stalks past him and doesn't look back.

Elena doesn't do any of the things that Damon would expect her to do on an ordinary basis, no. That is far worse. However, he is also not all that surprised. He has never used compulsion on her before except when she could not remember.

Damon has her necklace for her, but he does not get the opportunity to give it to her before she stalks past him and out the door. He stands there where he had been standing before, staring at some spot across the room from where he is.

The anger does not leave him.

The hurt doesn't either. It deepens.

It deepens and it opens within him like the opening to the hole of a cave, taking and swallowing him.

He presses past it.

He presses past it and turns from the room, walking out of it.

He does not need to be her friend, he does not need her to like him or to care for him to be able to protect her, to keep her safe and that is honestly all that matters.

Damon is ready to give Elena what she wants. It is less about being ready, more about being too busy dealing with everything else going on. If he really let it settle into his skull, it would be one more thing to grieve, one more thing to be angry about, one more thing to attack someone over.

Because that is what he does.

It's what Elena told him shortly before he snapped her brother's neck.

And she was right. One wouldn't think a girl so young could be so right so frequently. It's annoying. But Damon has enough other things on his mind that he can push away the hurt that tries to curl in when he thinks of how she stepped away, when she thinks of how she is done with him, and he doesn't fool himself into thinking that it will be different this time ( ... )

Elena saw Jeremy's face when he returned home that night Josef died.

She saw his face and that was almost all she needed to know, to understand how bad it was, the extent of what had gone down. While she was stuck at the Tower, so many things were going on that she will never be able to really picture, but she's starting to get she doesn't need to. There were details she was given that add to the picture, but it's nothing she will honestly be able to grasp.

Not unless she'd seen it firsthand.

It doesn't mean she hasn't been worried. There's a sense of imminent danger spreading around them, and Elena isn't one to sit back and do nothing, not when the lives of people she cares about, her brother, are at stake. So she's been investigating. It's led to fruitless results for the most part, but there's one aspect she believes might lead to some information ( ... )

It was a massacre. Damon has not been back to that area, because he knows that he'd still smell the blood if he did. It's not the kind that can be washed from the pavement, washed away from the walls or the streets, because it was everywhere.

Everything that he needs is is in Josef's office so he hasn't had any need to head that way again. It's not like he needs any help to increase his blood lust lately. The feeling of it increases all on its own without the smell of blood.

There's plenty of places to smell blood in a city like Chicago.

Damon steps through the door. He even knocks for a change, because he is trying to be on his best behavior. Jeremy lets him in and tells him that Elena is downstairs in her room when Damon asks, and it looks for a moment like Jeremy is going to say more but then he seems to think better of it and doesn't.

What could he say anyway?

I saw that place afterward. I'm sorry.Damon wouldn't want to hear it, and he already heard from Elena what he'd done to her. Not that he's not grateful that Elena ( ... )
